With Counter-Strike Global Offensive developers crunching a lot of hours inside the game’s development branch lately, something big is around the corner. And many of us hope that it’s related to Source 2.0 engine, fingers crossed. Besides introducing CSGO’s RMR sticker capsules, and fix for misplaced codes, it’s been quiet for CSGO. That makes us raise eyebrows about all the activity taking place inside the beta branch lately.
The CSGO community is eagerly waiting for CSGO’s migration to the Source 2.0 engine since the early rumors in 2020. By the looks of it, sooner or later CSGO will shift to the Source 2 engine because several years back the developers made a significant change for good.
During the remaking of CSGO’s classic maps, Valve shifted the way it named the game’s textures similarly to a naming format used by DOTA 2 and Half-Life: Alyx. The reason behind this change in naming format was to make it easier to import and render them in the Source 2 engine.

Moreover, with last year’s release of Source 2 workshop tools, it is now viable to import CSGO textures, models, and maps into the engine. Interestingly, in 2018 when Valve launched Danger Zone in CSGO, it wasn’t all about introducing the battle royale mode.
Behind the scene, every prop that got shipped with Danger Zone followed Source 2’s naming format. Since then, Valve has continued the same approach with the new content; all of the game’s high-resolution textures included in Dust 2, Nuke, Vertigo, and Operation Broken Fang.
Even after so many months, it is still unclear when Valve will finally make the big move to fully migrate CSGO on Source 2. However, the CSGO community is excited as it has got solid information this time instead of just rumors and speculation.
